Human Rights Advocacy, War and False Narrative: Rwanda revisited

27 October 2016 |University of Bath

13.15-14.05

Speaker: Dr Barrie Collins

An examination of the tragic case of Rwanda as a theatre of humanitarian intervention in which the complexity of war is reduced to a moral confrontation between good and evil. The consequences of this approach are discussed in terms of the establishment of a false narrative that obscured the real dynamics of the conflict and served to legitimise ‘Africa’s first morally constituted tyranny’.

Dr Barrie Collins is an independent researcher and author of ‘Rwanda 1994: The myth of the Akazu genocide conspiracy and its consequences’ (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014).

This event is supported by the Conflict, Security & International Order research cluster.
