Religious Literacy – taking religion seriously, whether you believe it or not
[Professor Adam Dinham’s inaugural lecture]
11 October 2016 | Ian Gulland Lecture Theatre, London
5.30pm – 7.30pm
There is a lamentable quality of conversation about religion and belief, just as we need it most. Billions of people around the world remain religious, despite assumptions of secularity. Millions of those people are in Europe and the West. Globalisation and migration put all of us in to daily encounter with an increasing diversity of religion and belief. Law and politics require us to engage with that diversity, regardless of our own religion, belief or none. Customers, service users and workplace partners reflect this diversity. How we engage is vexed and often challenging, at home, at work and in communities. This lecture will explore the challenges of religious literacy in a public sphere which struggles to talk about religion.
Panel discussants include: Rt Hon Charles Clarke (former Home Secretary and Education Secretary, and Visiting Professor of Religion and Public Life, Lancaster University); Baroness Elisabeth Butler-Sloss (first female Lord Justice of Appeal in the Court of Appeal); Arun Batra, (CEO of the National Equality Standard at Ernst and Young).
The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception.
